EURO 2024: Switzerland outplayed Hungary

The Swiss footballers achieved an important victory against Hungary in the opening match of the European Championship group stage, defeating them 3-1. This win puts the Swiss in a favorable position, on par with the Germans.

The RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne was packed to capacity, with jubilant fans enjoying a fantastic tournament opener. The match started cautiously for both sides, but Switzerland quickly took control.

Hungary had the first serious attempt, but Yann Sommer intervened confidently. Shortly after, Michel Aebischer threatened from the other end, but his attempt was flagged offside. The tension broke in the 13th minute when Switzerland scored the opening goal.

Youngster Kwadwo Duah, an unexpected choice by coach Murat Yakin, skillfully controlled the ball in space and fired accurately past Péter Gulácsi. Initially ruled offside, VAR review confirmed Slavko Vinčić’s decision that the goal was legitimate. Thus, the Ludogorets player became a key factor in the match on his second international appearance.

In the 20th minute, Ruben Vargas had a chance to increase the lead, but his shot troubled the goalkeeper and earned Switzerland a corner. Switzerland’s dominance was evident as Hungary struggled to create opportunities.

Switzerland continued to control possession, and in the 45th minute, they scored their second goal. Michel Aebischer, the assistant on the first goal, received the ball about twenty meters from goal, evaded a defender with a single move, and placed a precise shot into the bottom left corner of Gulácsi’s net.

With a two-goal lead, Switzerland went into halftime, and by the 60th minute, they could have scored two more goals to further solidify their lead.
